AN ANALYSIS OF ELECTRONIC JARGON IN COMPUTER SYSTEM (A SOCIOLINGUISTIC STUDY)

ABSTRACT



The research entitled An Analysis of Electronic Jargon in Computer System is intended to find out the forms, the meanings, and the functions of electronic jargon in computer system.

This type of research belongs to qualitative research. The writer takes data from www.computerjargon.org/search compiled by Jon Storm (2007). The supporting data are taken from some books and internet. In collecting data, noting technique and separating technique are used. The technique of analyzing data is qualitative technique.

The result of the research shows that the forms of electronic jargon in computer system are 45.9% or 56 features of word, 22.96% or 29 features of phrase, 16.39% or 20 features of abbreviation, and the last form is acronym with frequency 18 or 14.75%. The meaning of electronic jargon in computer system of denotative meaning has 114 features or 93.44% and connotative meaning has 8 features or 6.56%. The function of electronic jargon shows that 54.92% or 67 features have function to make easier for a person to communicate with their friends and 45.08% or 55 features have function to give a person a sense of belonging to a specific group.
