AN ANALYSIS OF SLANG USED IN ALICE WALKER’S THE COLOR PURPLE: A SOCIOLINGUISTIC STUDY

ABSTRACT


This research entitled An Analysis of Slang Used in Alice Walker’s The Color Purple: A Sociolinguistic Study is intended to find out the use of slang in novel The Color Purple by Alice Walker. From the explanation above, the writer can find some objectives dealing with the topic, and the objectives are a) to identify the forms of slang word in The Color Purple by Alice Walker; b) to identify the meanings of slang words in The Color Purple by Alice Walker; and c) to identify the functions of slang words in The Color Purple by Alice Walker.

The writer uses novel The Color Purple by Alice Walker, book, dictionary and other sources as sources of data. The techniques that are used in collecting the data are tapping technique and noting technique. To analyze the data, the writer uses contextual method by Soepomo. This research uses sociolinguistic study as approach because the writer discusses the use of slang in The Color Purple by Alice Walker. It is also used because this approach is appropriate with the title of the research.

The result of this study shows that there are six forms of slang; they are incorrect grammar, apocope, apheresis, alternative pronunciation, alternative spelling and conjoined word. It also can be known that there are three kinds of meaning; namely denotative meaning, affective meaning and reflected meaning. The functions of slang in this novel are as an intimacy and as a reducing seriousness.
