THE ANALYSIS OF INTRINSIC AND EXTRINSIC MOTIVATIONS DUE TO AMERICAN EDUCATIONAL SPIRIT AS SEEN IN THE FILM STEALING HARVARD

ABSTRACT


The research entitled The Analysis of Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivations due to American educational spirit as seen in the film Stealing Harvard aimed at finding out America as country with great opportunity for citizen to reach their success. The writer defines success as the achievement educational success, a prestigious education, and security. Those have become American educational spirit, particularly, the efforts of the main character to enrol Harvard university. Meanwhile, there are a great number of high school graduations who want to enter Harvard University. So, it is not easy as a piece of cake considering lots of student. Although Noreen is not clever enough and poor family, she is intrinsically motivated to get good education. She is also extrinsically motivated by her surroundings. That is why motivations become the centre of successful education. This study also focuses on revealing the main values of American educational spirit which are democracy, liberty, equality, capitalism, and optimism.

This graduating paper is conducted through qualitative research method and supported by library research. The data of this discussion were obtained through various sources called primary data and secondary data. Some related materials such as books, journals, articles, internets, critical essays consulting with the lecturer and some friends were also engaged. In doing the research, the interdisciplinary approach of American study is employed from various disciplines, such as socio-cultural, historical, and psychological disciplines.

The result of this study shows that the process of learning and education has made Noreen continuing to Harvard University and graduate with honour. To get success needs a long process although it needs to fight for some difficulties. Particularly, intrinsic and extrinsic motivations have played the vital role in getting educational success.
