English and Arabic Tense: A Comparative Study

ABSTRACT

This research talks about the comparison between two languages, namely English and Arabic. The writer focuses on English and Arabic tense. The purpose of his discussion is to find out the similarities and differences between English and Arabic tense.

The writer employs descriptive and comparative method. The data analysis is done by synchronic comparative method; comparing two languages, namely English and Arabic especially in tense. In getting data, the writer takes the data from some books, Arabic grammar books, and other sources. To collect data, the writer uses some techniques, such as noting technique, separating technique and transferring technique. In data analyzing technique, the writer uses two techniques, they are: Description: this thesis discusses English and Arabic by using the approach that has descriptive characteristics. The writer starts analyzing by describing: the kinds of English tense, the kind of Arabic tense and point by point comparison. To find out similarities and differences of the elements between English and Arabic tense the writer contrasts the two languages through point by point comparison: Comparison in the forms of tense ; to make analyzes easier, the writer uses the following procedures: Presenting the data ,Translating ,Comparing.

From this research it can be concluded that there are some similarities and differences between English and Arabic tense. The similarities and differences are found in kinds and form –system.
English and Arabic have three kinds of tense, they are; Present, Past and Future, and Fiil Madhi, Fiil Mudhore’ and Fiil Amr. Arabic language does not have specific time. المضارع الفعل , this division covers the English present, continuous and the future tense. The specific time of the imperfect may be indicated by the use of such word as الان: ‘now’; غدا:'tomorrow'; the prefix س or the word: سوف each of which means ‘shall’ or ‘will? الماضي الفعل, this division covers the English simple past tense and the perfect past and present tense. While in English language have 16 specific times.
From this research it can be concluded that there are some similarities and differences between English and Arabic tense.
