A COMPARATIVE STUDY BETWEEN ENGLISH AND BANYUMAS JAVANESE PASSIVE VOICE

ABSTRACT

This thesis is a comparative study between English and Banyumas Javanese passive voice. It focuses their passive voice. It is aimed at finding out the similarities and the differences between English and Banyumas Javanese passive voice.

This research uses a descriptive and comparative method. It describes English and Banyumas Javanese passive voice and compares them in order to find out their similarities and differences in the two languages. The researcher takes the data from English and Banyumas Javanese grammar books, Modern English, Kalimat pasive dalam Bahasa Jawa book and Stuktur Bahasa Jawa bagian barat (Banyumas). It applies noting, separating, transferring, description, and comparison technique.

The result this study shows that English and Banyumas Javanese have some similarities and differences. The similarities take place in statements and interrogatives. English and Banyumas Javanese passive voice are derived from the active one. The formation of English passive voice depends on the tenses of the sentence but it does not happen in Banyumas Javanese passive voice. English has simple present tense, simple past tense, future, progressive, and perfect tense while Banyumas Javanese does not. Banyumas Javanese uses prefixes di-, tek-, ke-, and suffix-na to form the passive voice.
