A SYNTACTIC ANALYSIS OF PREPOSITIONAL PHRASES USED IN AUSTRALIAN SHORT STORY STEELE RUDD’S “ON OUR SELECTION” AND “ELIZABETH BURCHILL’S “INNAMINCKA

ABSTRACT

In this term paper, the writer of this research discusses syntactic analysis of prepositional phrases in Stelle Rudd’s “On Our selection” and Elizabeth Burchill’s “Innamincka”. This thesis are aimed at describing the form of prepositional phrases, describing the syntactic function of prepositional phrases and describing the frequency of occurrences of the meaning of prepositional phrases by making syntactic process and table of frequency of occurrences of the meaning of prepositional phrase itself.

This thesis uses qualitative method but also uses numeral data to make the analysis more clearly especially to know the frequency of occurrences of prepositional phrases and its meaning. To explore and examine, the writer uses syntactic approach. By using syntactic approach, the writer will understand obviously how to analyze the form of prepositional phrases, the syntactic function, and its meaning.

After analyzing in long process, the writer of this research finds many forms of prepositional phrases. There are preposition + pronoun, preposition + noun, preposition + noun phrase, preposition + Ing clause, and preposition + noun clause. The highest form of prepositional phrases are prepositional phrases formed by preposition + noun phrase. In addition, there are six syntactic function of prepositional phrases, they are Adjunct, disjunct, conjunct, post modifier in a noun phrase, complement of a verb, complement of an adjective. The syntactic function which often occurs in both of short stories is post modifier in noun phrase. By using syntactic process and making the table of frequency of occurrences of prepositional phrases, the writer finds the position of prepositional phrase and its meaning. The writer finds the highest frequency of occurrences of meaning around 45 % is place and position and the lowest frequency of occurrences around 2 % is agentive.
