ABSTRACT

        This study is intended to know the influence of parents’ education towards students’ English achievement of the second year students of SMA Negeri I Godean in Academic Year 2007/2008. Parents education is tested as independent variable (X) while the students’ English achievement as dependent variable (Y).
        The population of the research is 160 students of the students of the second year of SMA Negeri I Godean in academic year 2007/2008. The writer takes 106 students out of 145 students as the sample of the research. The sample is selected by using probability-sampling technique in which the sample utilizes Krejcie table. The data of the parents’ education were collected by using documentation from school officer and the data of students’ English achievement were collected by using documentation from the English teacher. The data were analyzed by utilizing descriptive and inferential statistic and the hypothesis is analyzed through Pearson Product Moment Correlation technique and Multiple Regression Analysis.
       By analyzing the result of the research, it was found out that the mean of parents’ education is 6.04 and the mean of students’ English achievement is 6.52. The result of hypothesis testing shows that there is no significant influence of parents’ education towards the students’ English achievement. The result of analysis proves that the value of r obtained (0.022) is lower than the value of r table (0.195). The effective contribution of parents’ education towards students’ English achievement is 0.1%. It means that the parents’ education gives a very little influence (0.1%) towards the improvement of the students’ English achievement. The fact shows that the student’s English achievement is not only determined by parents’ education but also determined by other factors.
