LOYALTY AS REFLECTED IN THE MAIN CHARACTER IN SIR WALTER SCOTT’S IVANHOE: A PSYCHOLOGICAL STUDY

ABSTRACT




This research is entitled “Loyalty as Reflected in the Main Character in Sir Walter Scott’s Ivanhoe: A Psychological Study”. This research is intended to analyze Ivanhoe’s loyalty in the novel. Scott tells a story about ancient English with its mighty and greedy knights. The novel is about a knight named Ivanhoe who has blind loyalty to his master, King Richard and also to his country, the England. Scott gives the reader a strong characterization of Ivanhoe. It gives the readers an insight to the very basic human instinct, the greed of power, wealth and name.

This research employs the psychological approach. This approach is used to analyze Ivanhoe’s characterization. The psychological approach involves various theories of psychology to explain the personality of the character in a story. The proponent of this approach insists that each character’s behavior could be referred to the psychology of human being. Moreover, personality is one of the subjects of psychology. It involves patterns of behaviors, thoughts, and feelings.

The result of the study shows that, first, Ivanhoe in the novel is characterized as a person who is brave, clever, and also honest. He is also a man with self-confidence. He is also a strong man and has high dignity. Ivanhoe is also characterized as a very loyal man. The characteristics above are shown in every action, speech, and thought he did. The second conclusion is about his loyalty. Ivanhoe is a very loyal man. It is inline with his characteristics stated in the previous paragraph. Ivanhoe’s loyalty can be seen from his actions and thoughts. He is very loyal to his promises. Once he has promise, he will keep and fulfill it. He is also very loyal to his master, King Richard. He fights for King Richard in Palestine and he wins. He also helps King Richard to get his crown back from his evil brother, Prince John. Ivanhoe is also loyal to his country. He concerns with his country’s safety and peacefulness. He is very worried whenever his country is in danger of disintegration and civil war. He dares to force the King to seize the power back and sit in the throne of England.
