A MENTAL DISTURBANCE OF THE MAIN CHARACTER AS REFLECTED IN AGATHA CHRISTIE’S AND THEN THERE WERE NONE: A PSYCHOLOGICAL APPROACH

ABSTRACT




The study entitled A Mental Disturbance of the Main Character as Reflected in Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None: A Psychological Approach has three objectives of the study. The first is to describe the characterization of the main character Mr. Justice Wargrave, observed psychologically. The second is to describe the mentality disturbance and the causes of mentality disturbance faced by the main character Mr. Justice Wargrave in And Then There Were None. The last is to describe the moral value of the novel.

To obtain the object of this research, the writer used psychological analysis through Subhan’s theory of character and characterization (2003: 8). The writer also used the theory of mental disturbance by Siswanto (2997: 9), the theory of moral lesson by Nurgiantoro (1995: 321). In addition, the writer used Sigmund Freud’s Paychoanalytic theory in Hall book (1979: 22). It is used to understand the mentality disturbance of Mr. Justice Wargrave. The methodologies used in this research are observation and documentation. The technique of collecting the data is qualitative method.

The result of this research included Mr. Justice Wargrave’s characterization like romantic, cruel, brainy, and cautious. The mental disturbances faced by Mr. Justice Wargrave are: strange act, planned fantastic murder, strong desire, survive to murder, murdered ten people, and committed suicide. The causes of Mr. Justice Wargrave’s mental disturbed are romantic imagination and sadistic. And the last is the moral values of the novel And Then There Were None are: responsible, justice, uncontrolled, and lying.
